By ChinaFilm.com Published: 2008-03-20
One hundred years ago, the movie was introduced to China and soon accepted by the populace. Ren Jingtai, a well known Beijing photographer and studio owner, came up with an irresistible idea. He would make his own movie and in that movie, he wanted to present the art of his own people. Yet it was not until Ren went to the birthday celebration of the famous Peking Opera actor, Tan Xinpei, that he decided that his movie would portray performances of the Peking Opera. Tan generously supported the work of Ren and his assistant Liu. Ren’s movie was finally completed and released to the public. That was the birth of the first China-made film.
