The story takes place in a small mountain village in northern Fujian. The year is 1955. Ahning, a woman teacher at the mountain school, adopts a crippled child. Ahxiang, a young man from the mountains, extends a helping hands, but Ahning still misses her husband in Taiwan. While he is out gathering medicinal herbs for her and the child, Ahxiang plunges down a cliff. When he is found, still alive, in a tree. Ahning embraces him tightly, unwilling to let him go… Thirty years pass in the peaceful and harmonious life of Ahning and Ahxiang. Then, the clam is disturbed by the unexpected arrival of Ahning’s former husband from Taiwan. The three people face a shock to their sentiments and souls.
