Divorce (li hun)
By ChinaFilm.com Published: 2008-04-24
This film is adapted from the well-known novelist Lao She’s story of the same name. The story takes place in the early 1930s in Beijing. Mr. Li, a clerk in a financial department, is a college graduate. He is shy, honest and romantic, but his wife is an uncultured country woman, which causes him great distress. Mrs. Li has recently become acquainted with Mrs. Wu and Mrs. Qiu, both of whom are seeking a divorce. They often get together to exchange stories about how they punish their husbands, which makes Mrs. Li appear even more vulgar. Mrs. Ma, the daughter-in-law of Li’s landlord, although pretty and quiet, has been abandoned by her husband. In Li’s eyes, Mrs. Ma is pure poetry and he is in love with her. Mrs. Wu and Mrs. Qiu eventually give up the idea of divorce, and Mrs. Ma is reunited with her husband who returns home. Li is shocked and heartbroken, but facing up reality, he returns to the country with his wife and children… Screenplay: Li Chensheng, Wang Haowei Director: Wang Haowei Cinematography: Li Chensheng Art Director: Hao Jingyuan Music: Zhang Piji Starring: Zhao Youliang, Ding Jiali, Li Ding, Chen Xiaoyi Running time: 116 min.
