The True Hearted (xin xiang)

Jingjing’s parents get divorced and he has to move to his maternal grandfather’s to live for a tine. His grandfather, whom he has never met, lives alone. Both feel like strangers, and so a series of conflicts emerge. Aunt Lian has lived alone since her husband went to Taiwan decades ago. She and Jingjing’s grandfather love each other like husband and wife and depend on each other for survival. Their tranquil life is interrupted by a letter from Aunt Lian’s husband in Taiwan, who intends to return to mainland China to join Lian. Not long afterwards, Lian’s husband dies of illness when he is about to embark on his trip. On hearing the news, Aunt Lian dies, too. To decently bury Aunt Lian, grandfather has to sell all the costumes and paraphernalia he used when he was a Beijing opera star. To Help grandfather raise the cash for the funeral, Jingjing goes to the docks to sing as a street performer.
