Zhiguo is an orphan brought up in Dali by the Village Head, Laohei, who treats him like his own son. After graduation from high school, Zhiguo feels depressed when he has to return to his native place to do farm work. Laohei tries his best to find him a job as a commune reporter. Zhiguo begins a new life. He works very hard and passes the entrance exams to Party school. He embarks on a political career and advances from being a village head to being a magistrate. However, to improve the background situation in Dali Village in the implementation of the country’s family planning, he falls out with some villagers and in the construction of a railway line, he is responsible for excavating some villagers’ ancestral graves. Though he doesn’t regret doing so, he feels sorry for the people in the village. When leaving the village to take up his post as a magistrate, he looks forward to being the recipient of earth presented to him by the villagers, which is a time-honored tradition. As he waits for the earth, he is prey to anxiety…
