The Decisive Engagement Part Two: The Huaihai Campaign (da jue zhan)

The Military Commission of the Central Committee and its Chairman Mao Zedong decide to expand the military campaign to the central and east China battlefields. They devise a strategy for a joint operation by Central and East China Field Armies. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek also deploys his troops in the Xuzhou and Bengbu areas. He wants a shawdown with the People’s Liberation Army. The resulting Huaihai Campaign began on Nov. 6, 1948. Under the command of Liu Bocheng, Chen Yi, Deng Xiaoping, Su Yu and Tan Zhenlin, the PLA encircled KMT General Huang Botao’s troops, and cut off the KMT army’s retreat in Xuzhou. After a bitter battle, the PLA completely annihilate two divisions of the KMT forces, and at the same time besiege commander Du Yuming’s troops. When the Northeast Field Army and the North China Army divide and surround General Fu Zuoyi’s troops, the PLA launches a general attack on Du Yuming’s forces in January, 1949. Although Chiang Kai-shek tries to save situation in every way he can device, the KMT army is unable to win. On January 10, Du’s forces are completely annihilated and Du himself is captured. The Huaihai Campaign lasted 65 days, and more than 555,000 enemy soldiers lost their lives in the fighting.
