In 1919, the anti-imperialist and anti-feudalist May 4th Movement broke out in China. This initiated the Chinese revolution led by intellectuals calling for a new culture based on democracy and science. In the face of Western ideas, a group of enlightened intellectuals, including Chen Duxiu, Li Dazhao and Mao Zedong, adopted Marxism as their guiding theory, under the influence of the success of the October Revolution in the Soviet Unions, they were convinced that the road f the Russian Revolution was the way to save China. Therefore, they decided to establish a political party of the Chinese Proletariat. They proposed to set up a number of Marxist study societies throughout the country, promoting Marxism while fight against the reactionary forces. Succeeding in resisting against the obstruction and ruthless suppression by the warlord government and the imperialist powers, these revolutionary pioneers finally held the First National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party on July 23rd, 1921.
