Hongxing, a simple country girl, has a brother, Li Pingwa, who cannot marry because their family is poor. Li Pingwa resolves his dilemma by signing a marriage agreement, which stipulates that Hongxing will marry the wealthy Qiangguo, and Qiangguo’s sister, in turn will marry Li Pingwa. But on their wedding night, Qiangguo gratuitously accuses Hongxing of not being a virgin and drives her out of his house. On returning home, Hongxing is brutally beaten by her brother. She later goes insane, and is forced to “confess” her “affair” with the village school teacher Li Mingguang. Li Mingguang then finds himself publicly hacked on death, leaving Hongxing to commit suicide.
