By ChinaFilm.com Published: 2008-05-08
This film was adapted from a popular folk song. During the Second World War the Japanese invaders ruthlessly slaughtered ordinary Chinese people. Witnessing the Japanese kill his follow villagers, among them his own parents, Little Cowherd conceives a deep hatred for the invaders and makes up his mind to avenge his dear ones. Under the guidance of Aunt Lan Ying, he helps to nurse wounded Eighth Route Army soldiers and delivers messages, joining in all sorts of battles against the enemy. In a large mopping-up campaign he covers the withdrawal of villagers as well as wounded soldiers by herding cattle to block the invaders’ way to the village. He also uses his song to lure the enemy into the Eighth Route Army’s trap so that they are completely wiped out. But he himself also loses his young life.
