Kawashima Yoshiko (chuan dao fang zi)

Yoshiko Kawashima, a descendant of the Qing court, is the step-daughter of an Japanese rojin. She becomes a renowned Japanese spy in the 1920s and 1930s. This film depicts only part of her career. In April, 1928, the Japanese army in Northeast China decided to eliminate Zhang Zuolin. Kawashima approaches Zhang’s whereabouts. This action results in Zhang’s death. Afater that, she receives orders to go to Tianjin disguised as a man to kidnap Empress Wanrong of the Qing court, who was in exile there. Another mission takes her to Shanghai, the largest city in China and a centre of intrigue at that time… To realize her dream of restoring the Qing dynasty, she goes to any length, often even surprising her Japanese masters. But when the Japanese army feels that she is too difficult to control, they want to send her former lover to secretly get rid of her.
