This is a story about the PLA soldiers who guard China’s borders. Platoon Leader Lan Her has worked on the frontier for more than ten years. He is about to be promoted to a company commander, he is unexpectedly replaced by some one else. Planning to take his wife out from the countryside and let her live a better life, he now fails in his expectations. Lan Her makes full allowances for the organization’s difficulties, and so applies to return., as a demobbed troop, to the countryside to be with his wife. Platoon Leader Liu Qingjian, who comes from a cadre’s family, returns to the borer post after graduating from military school, even though he has the option to stay on and live the comfortable life of a PLA teacher.
