The Fox Murderers (hu li mi an)

In the early years of the Republic of China, in an old and quiet town in the south, a young man named Feng Yisong is found dead with the marks of a fox’s teeth on his neck. Rumor goes around that he is bitten to death by a fox-spirit. The next day happens to be the Mid-autumn Festival, and county magistrate Ren Ganfan entertains celebrities of the town at a party. The guests recite poems and together enjoy the moonlight. Then dancer Little Peacock, is found dead after a performance of the dance “the Black Fox”, again with the marks of fox’s teeth on her neck. As the case is being investigated, a witness, an orphan girl living in the Black Fox Temple, Hu Hong, burns herself to death. As the three deaths in a few days cause horror amongst the local people and the police are baffled, the murderer himself appears quite unexpectedly.
