Inside an Old Grave (gu mu huang zai)

This film is based on eight stories from the Ming Dynasty collection Tales of Liaozhai by Pu Songling. Yang Yuwei, a scholar, staying in a desolate house which is in fact a grave, is studying to pass the imperial examinations which will afford him entry to officialdom. He gets to know Lian Suo, a ghost, the two fall in love. With the help of friends, Yang fights the predatory ghost Bai Wuchang, which enables Lian Suo To return to life. But Lian Suo’s parents look down upon Yang, and force the couple to separate. Lian Suo stands up against them. On his way to the imperial examinations, Yang falls ill. Witnessing the tragedy, Qiao Na, a fox spirit, saves Yang. With help from the flower spirit Nie Xiaoqian, Yang passes the examination and becomes a high official.
