At the end of the Yuan Dynasty and the beginning of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) Zhu Yuanzhang sends his godson Zhu Jianxiong to pay respects to Chen Youliang at his tomb, who was Zhu Yuanzhang’s rival, and offer amnesty and enlistment to Chen’s old subordinates, to stabilize the south of China and to send a punitive expedition against the Yuan troops. Hearing of this, Emperor Yuanshun sends Liu Yunpeng to assassinate Zhu Jianxiong, and put the blame on Chen’s subordinates. Chen’s goddaughter Chen Mochou admires Zhu Jianxiong, but she can’t forget Zhu Yuanzhang is Chen Youliang’s enemy, so she is caught in a dilemma. Chen Mochou’s maid Xiuxiu is a spy for the Yuan dynasty, but she falls in love with Zhu Jianxiong, too. So we can see both love and hatred in the film.
