By ChinaFilm.com Published: 2008-05-27
This action movie follows a changing relationship between captive and warder. Chagan, a famous horse thief from the Mongolian steppes, is arrested in the 1930s and put under the guard of Yideng. One of Yideng’s prison horses is stolen by a gang. The gang members belong to a family one of whose members was arrested by Yideng, and they are bent on revenge. Yideng refuses to be beaten. He commands Chagan to get the horse back, and Chagan, who is afraid for his pregnant wife, dares not refuse. At first, Chagan’s sympathies lie with the gang members, and he works hard to protect them from Yedeng at the same time as he gets the horse back. However, the more he learns about how Yideng has suffered at their hands and the crimes they have committed, the more he comes to understand him. With a plot full of double-crosses and stabs in the back, the movie builds rapidly to a bloody and tragic climax. When a third man intervenes, neither of the two heroes survives.
