By ChinaFilm.com Published: 2008-05-27
This film is based on the ancient Chinese novel Outlaws of the Marshes. In the early part of the 12th century, the state is ruled by an evil man and the common people live in misery. Three of the Ruan brothers are poverty stricken fishermen. The Fifth Brother is in love with the fisher girl Pan Qing, but the local despot He Zhuang takes a fancy on the girl and sends out some men to capture her. But the would-be kidnappers are beaten by Three Ruan brothers. He Zhuang then captures the Second Brother by trickery. To save him, the Fifth and Seventh brothers invite a group of swashbucklers to join in the fight. They finally kill the despot He Zhuang. They then join the local heroes headed by Chao Gai and Wu Yong in their efforts to capture gifts extorted by a group of corrupted officials. To facilitate their escape, they follow Chao Gai and Wu Yong to their rebel stronghold on Mount Liangshan.
