Honors for Sale (jin bian bei hou)

The Qinghe town government decides to honor its rich peasants with inscribed boards. Jia Huairen, head of the township enterprise administration office, comes for an investigation. Wang Manfu is a stubborn miser, a peasant with a traditional outlook. Saying that he has no money, he refuses the honor. Bent solely on profit, his brother Wang Manxi makes a fortune selling fake ratsbane and embezzling public funds to resell color TV sets at a profit. He also engages in many other kinds of shady deals, but the town government presents him with a “gold nameplate” with these characters on it: Good at Making Money. The industrious and honest farmers in the village are disgusted at Wang Manxi, and before long, the gold nameplate becomes soiled with dung, causing a great disturbance. A comedy, the film expose the states of mind of the country people confronted by dramatic social changes.
