Jia Zhangke Won the Art Achievement Award at the 10th Deauville Asian Film Festival in France
March 14, 2008. Jia Zhangke, the 38 years old Chinese young director was bestowed an art achievement award, the first ever in his film career, by the organizing committee of the 10th Deauville Asian Film Festival in France. On the same day, the festival organizer held a grand ceremony to salute the director, who started his directing career just ten years ago.
Accepting the trophy, Jia made the remarks that “to salute a director who started directing films just ten years ago requires great courage and judgment. In the ten years from Xiao Wu in 1998 to In-utile in 2007, my work has witnessed great changes in the society of China. As far as an individual is concerned, when confronting the complicated social reality, to remain silent may be safe. But every time when I find myself behind the viewfinder, I’d feel stronger for the sake of directing. Making movies help me sustain the fundamental love and sense of justice. Thanks, movies! ” In the interviews after the ceremony, the young Chinese director modestly remarked that his road of film has just begun, saying that when he learned the festival planned to grant him “Life Achievement Award,” he was very uneasy. At the suggestion of his friends, he talked to the festival and eventually changed it to “Art Achievement Award.”
In the ceremony, the mayor of Deauville also awarded Jia Zhangke a Medal of Deauville for his cultural contribution to the city. The film festival also organized a retrospective in his name which showcased all of his movies in the last decade. Fujian Mirage by the Chinese director Weng Shouming and Kang Bai Yin by Cai Shangjun were entered into the Official Competition category and Assembly by Feng Xiaogang into the Asian Action Films Competition.
